Post Jam Fixes


After the jam finished I felt the game wasn't quite finished and there were a number of bugs so I decided to spend some time polishing the game and adding in some of the features that had been cut to meet the jam's deadline. The new 1.1 version of the game is intended to be what the original game was intended to be but what time just didn't allow.

What's changed

  • I fixed an annoying bug with the textures that caused all the colours to get messed up, ultimately this came down to Unity automatically optimising an 8x8 pixel image and the fix was as simple as unticking the optimise checkbox.
  • The enemies now patrol when the player gets close giving you the option of waiting until they're looking the other way to enter the room and attack them from behind.
  • I finished the other enemy type, a simple robot that tries to shoot you with it's laser. This was all modelled during the jam but I ran out of time to do it's animation and laser effect and had to drop it.
  • I added some more sound effects to give the game some more character.
  • The explosion particles were replaced with actual textures instead of coloured blobs.
  • I had a go at creating my first cut scene which shows the player escaping the base on a rocket. I must admit this is very rudimentary and won't win me any Oscar's but I did manage to learn a few things along the way.

What's next

I don't have any further upgrades planned for the game in the immediate future as I feel I've taken this as far as I want to for now. While I'm proud of what I achieved in a fairly short period of time, I feel the game just lacks the fun factor. I would be really keen to hear from anyone who has feedback on what I could do better in the future to make the game more fun.
